Kyphi, incense of vespers, and the night. Clary Sage, flowers of the Moon. Both have fragrances that open the doors to the metaphysical background of the world. I formulated this Kyphi following the ancient Egyptian process but with my own choice of ingredients. I wanted to create a fragrant stage on which Clary could sing her musky and euphoric scent-song I built that stage using resins and plants known to open the third eye such as Poplar bud resin, Nutmeg, Mimosa bark couples with Syrian Rue seeds.
Clary’s scent song and its effects is a song I know well. Every year, during my nightly harvests, I make it a point to turn off my flashlight and wait. I stand under the vault of heaven, in the cathedral of the night forest, and to let my eyes flood with the chemical rhodopsin, which I think of by its more poetic common name, “visual purple”. Slowly, what was once dark, becomes visible in the night and I am able to find my way up the indigo trail, following my white dog, to the Clary Sage garden. On a warm summer night, I smell her long before I see her. Sometimes, I merely take a hedonistic pleasure in my immersion in the scene, but sometimes life veers off into the sacred. Her musky, amber fragrance mingles with the oxygen-rich air of the forest and creates a heightened sense of being alive. The Milky Way seems a bit closer, the whispering of the trees seems almost comprehensible, and the firefly dances appear as choreography. The crystals that make up the body of Clary’s fragrance reflect the light in subtle ways and cause the plants to look like they are glowing in the moonlight. Connection is made. Inspiration arrives.
The night path to the Clary and Be's Dog Olibanum
The name Clary has its roots in words meaning “clear”. Her seeds have the ability to produce a healing mucilage for an irritated eye, this fact has long been pointed to as the reason for her common name. I think what is also acknowledged in Clary’s name is her ability to stimulate and clear our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual bodies. Clary has the ability to balance hormonal issues, which can often cause feelings of mental fog or chaos. The master controller of the hormones in our body is the pituitary gland. The pituitary gland and the pineal gland sync together since the pineal gland produces melatonin, which helps maintain a circadian rhythm, regulate reproductive hormones and dopamine. Melatonin is produced at night when Clary is at her peak. Just as scientists admit, they do not know all the functions of the pineal gland and melatonin,
I can not say exactly how or why Clary calls me with her fragrant voice to stand in the dark with her, but she does, and her soul spills into mine and we are blended together.
