One of the aspects that I appreciate the most in my work with fragrance is how it has deepened my experience of being in the world. Trying to recreate the scent-scapes of these moments in forest, field, and garden, I feel are part of my work as an advocate for the natural world and a plant healer. There are moments in nature, particularly in the Spring, after a long winter, that I briefly catch an odor in the breeze and am washed with happiness.
Fragrance is by nature ephemeral and some of the most potent of any season flowers are also ephemeral. This tribe of plants emerges in early spring to take advantage of the sun’s rays before the trees leaf out shade the forest floor. Their bulbs, corms, and rhizomes wait patiently all winter until they feel the earth warming and stretch out green leaves to drink in the sun and then flower in order to feed the hungry, overwintering insects. In the forest, lily of the valley, solomon’s seal, blood root all sing a scented song, while in the garden, Eurasian natives like daffodils, hyacinths tulips exhale their sweet breath. These floral, Ephemeral beauties combine with the green sweetgrass, ferns, and other emerging plants to send a message of the fresh, green of new birth and reunion. Standing in a clearing, surrounded by my gardens, warm sun on my face, the plants sing to me and the bumblebees, it is an ephemeral, a small moment of sanctity.
