Moon Tide is an incense that carries the flow and feel of water. It has always been a challenge to create a watery or oceanic aroma in incense; believe me, I have been trying for many years. But this year, we have been lucky enough to procure some very fresh resins directly from their country of origin. The idea to blend the two into a moon tide incense came like a dream one morning, and sure enough, the results amazed me.

 

The first resin was Elemi, soft and very “gooey”, white like the moon, and holding the scent of its origin, the Rainforests of the Philippines. It is a very difficult resin to work with, even packing it alone is a challenge, but so worth it.

 

Then, mixed with Elemi, was the resin Breu claro from the rainforests of Brazil. This lovely resin is dry and powdery, yet still retains the essence of rain. When they were blended together, they supported each other in a surprising way. Not only was the scent elegant and subtle, but the texture became workable and stayed stable and packable.

 

The mixture had the look of a sea creature, so we decided to give it a light iridescence (edible powder) and topped each portion with a fresh water pearl.

 

Included with the tin of Moon Tide is a small wooden serving spoon. Use it to scoop out a portion of the blend and put it on the Electric incense heater, spoon and all. It will rapidly melt into a shimmering pool, releasing its lovely fragrance. The spoon may then be removed. Be sure to use a foil cup for this incense; a gold foil will leak

The name Moon Tide was inspired by a recent piece written for our book-in-progress, “Way of the Moon”.

 

“When the full moon pulls the tide and bathes the shore in silver, the oyster parts its shell to feed and breathe—microscopic plankton drift in on the swell, and the oyster’s gills sift them out. At the same time, lunar cycles cue reproductive rhythms in many shellfish, nudging them toward release and openness.

 

Sensing the change in water , tide and light, it eases its shell open just enough to breathe and feed. In that small, trusting moment, the moon’s glow slips inside, and its secret pearl catches the light—revealed by the quiet tides of the moon and sea that guides its life.”
