In Aztec mythology, the "tlilxochitl" (black flower) refers to the vanilla orchid pod, which was, according to legend, born from the blood of a princess, symbolizing forbidden love and fragrant, aromatic power. It was used by the Aztecs to flavor chocolate and as medicine, representing both beauty and the intoxicating, "recondite, or hidden" nature of the plant.
